1964 - The Carter Report on Graduate Education in U.S. Universities ranked MSU 13th among departments of botany. This ranking was the highest of any MSU department.

1969 - The Roose-Anderson Report on Excellence of Graduate Programs ranked MSU 9th among departments of botany. Ours was the only department at MSU to rank in the"distinguished" category.

MSU/DOE Plant Research Laboratory
The establishment of a laboratory dedicated to experimental plant biology at MSU was approved by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1963. The laboratory building was completed in 1966. Funding is now provided by a continuing grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The 12 regular faculty members hold academic appointments in departments of the University, eight in Botany and Plant Pathology.

Extension

Botany faculty members, from the beginning of the University, have provided practical advice to growers and homeowners through written correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, printed bulletins, oral presentations, conferences, and meetings with individual growers. More recently, these have been augmented by radio talks, television presentations and computer communications. Even 100 years ago, Professor Beal estimated that he had answered 5000 questions concerning grasses, weeds, trees, fungi, etc. during the period 1904-1910.
The Extension aspect of the University's mission was expanded and formalized by passage of the federal Smith-Lever Act in 1914, which established the Cooperative Extension Service. The Act provided federal funds to be matched with monies from the states. At present, six plant pathologists, representing 2.87 full-time equivalents, are responsible for extension activities. These include:

G.C. Adams (27%) Diseases of woody ornamentals and forest trees
L.P. Hart
(50%) Diseases of field crops
M.K. Hausbeck
(61%) Diseases of vegetables and greenhouse ornamentals
A.L. Jones
(50%) Tree fruit diseases
D.C. Ramsdell
(50%) Disease of small fruits
J.M. Vargas
(49%) Turfgrass diseases
In all cases, the faculty member's extension work is complemented by related applied and fundamental research.
